A popular digestive which is always kept handy in our Indian homes is saunf or the fennel seeds. As a child I used to find the distinctive smell rather unpleasant and naturally it was the prerogative of the childhood bestie and younger brother to chew copious mouthfuls of it and blow their saunf scented breath in my face. I am thinking today that I was much too nice in running away. I should have instead practiced a barf technique which was what they deserved !!!

Fennel washed
But then again, I won’t be having these memories to share now ! My chaddi buddy is most upset that my palate has grown considerably to accommodate the fennel seeds in all its glory . LOL !

Wash it well
The fennel bulbs however aren’t so popular in our cooking at all and I don’t know why that is! Every time I watched a cookery show or gorgeous images with the fennel bulbs I would so wish for them to be available here.

It looks like the Universe whispered my wish to a farmer in Ooty because the fennel bulbs manifested magically at our most frequented organic store in Coimbatore (Wild Earth Foods). I was thrilled to bits and set about making this simple but tasty salad for us and for my Uncle’s family. We served it with a savoury cauliflower & caramelised onion galette and it was one of the most perfect meals in terms of flavour, food pairings and quantity. I love it when things come together unexpectedly. Don’t you ?!
If you find fennel at your grocer’s please do try this easy recipe. It’s perfect for summer.
