Cauliflower kadai masala

Cauliflower kadai masala

A well cooked cauliflower dish is something I enjoy eating. The wholesome texture and that inherent sweetness makes this ingredient a delight to try out new recipes with.

This particular cauliflower lunch side was one of the first dishes I made a few months after my wedding. I think it was one of those Indian cookery shows on one of the many Star world channels where this tall chef ,garbed in his professional whites was making this dish. The original version did include potatoes too…the famous aloo-gobi ,but I remember ditching the potato as early as the second time I made this.

I do think of adding it each time but then the organic cauliflower from Wild Earth Foods (organic store in Coimbatore) (8098944444) ,looks so good that I don’t feeling it needs anything else to shine.

Over the years I have enacted a live tutorial, several times, to the helpers in our kitchen but for some reason they always end up overcooking or under cooking the cauliflower for this particular recipe. So it’s come back full circle to me and I have re-discovered why I loved it so much in the first place! And having made it, happily took a picture with blue pottery bowls which were also bought around the same time as when first trying this recipe !

I didn’t plan the photo that way…it just happened. Imagine that !!! These blue pottery bowls and other platters from Pondicherry were something a friend and I constantly stocked up on back then…don’t ask why. It was a time before we became more preoccupied with motherhood… I don’t even remember anymore what those days were like 😀

Did you know that many tribals in TamilNadu are familiar with the cauliflower and call it “kattu poo“…apparently wild cauliflower florets do grow in wooden areas where the soil is moist most of the year. What we think of as an ‘English’ vegetable could also possible have an Indian cousin, native to these parts.

I do hope you will like this as much as I do.
