Honey jumbles

Memories of this childhood treat came rushing to my mind once I started planning the menu for my own kids’ parties. Mom made many versions of these and I vividly remember one particular cookbook which was gifted to me ,that had pictures of a little girl stirring away and filling paper cups with these honeyed confections ! That image always stayed with me .Though I was never allowed to test my culinary skills in the kitchen ,when I was little,reading these simple recipes with illustrations suitable for a child…now I realize,inadvertently taught me a lot ! That’s probably why ,I still am in awe of paper cup cake cases ’cause back then ,they were not available here…but were featured in a lot of cookbooks 🙂

Though I used to diligently make these honey jumbles year after year…they have been forgotten of late. So when I had to bake something sweet and appealing for my kid’s school carnival,this was the recipe that came to mind right away…plus the sheer exhaustion, at the mere thought of baking 200 cupcakes/cookies…lol ! The honey jumbles on the other hand, I definitely could do ! The fact that they are delicious and that my kids loved them, pacified my guilt at not doing more !

The carnival was so much fun,I had the pleasure of sharing my food stall with 3 lovely ladies and their kids. They put in so much effort and churned out sev puri ,orange cake, choc-chip cookies, dahi puri, caramel popcorn,choc-chip muffins ,brownies…we even sold spicy peanuts and my home -made orange peel scrub…the kids donated the money for the Women’s Voluntary Service...it was a most enjoyable evening and tired but happy,we called it a day !

Oh…and the reason that I share the honey jumbles recipe is that as many kids loved them , the mommies and other grown ups loved it more ! The fact that these contain no white sugar was wonderful news to those grown ups who enjoyed every bite down to the last honey coated cornflake. Yum !
