Nellikkai Saadham (Gooseberry/Amla rice)

Nellikkai Saadham (Gooseberry/Amla rice)

AMLA health benefits ,Getting enough Vitamin C ?

As I am typing out this recipe to share I can’t help but think back to when news went around that I had started a food blog. I honestly did not expect so much love and support….this happened on a weekly basis. The food column for The Hindu happened every Friday. So on that day of the week ,my whatsapp would ping with at least a few thoughtful messages offering support and encouragement. I can’t tell you how that much helped me continue what I had started thanks to being pushed by a friend.

What happened is that it helped me form a bond with people who I otherwise may have no connect with despite being from the same city or community. So you can understand even more why I am so supportive of local businesses and my ooru ! People talk of small town mentality…but I think pettiness exists everywhere. We just need to look beyond and be the kind of person which helps us sleep well at night.

One of the people who constantly made it a point to mention my articles was an elder in our community, fondly referred to as Vimalamma. If we met at an occasion she would make it a point to give me feedback and then say “keep it up”. When I moved on from print media to the digital world, I would get the occasional phone call from Vimalama asking if I was still writing.

It’s so delicious

One day,an envelope arrived with my name written on it in a bold handwriting. To open it and find a handwritten recipe ,for an Amla rice, from someone who is known to be an excellent cook and an encyclopaedia of all sorts of culinary nuances was incredibly overwhelming. It was sent to my mother’s house.

It also contained a note for my sister-in-law ,Ramya.

When I called to thank Vimalama , she said,”keep writing about our traditional foods”.

Since then I have her number saved on my phone. So when I got a call a few months ago and I answered saying “Hello Vimalamma….” she said, “oh how did you know it was me?”… in crisp British English as is the case with many of her generation.

People like Vimalama ,according to me ,are the backbone and wealth of the kind of culture where words aren’t necessary to know that we have each other to lean on. This recipe is as original as it gets (Heart)

There’s no way I am erasing that phone number !
