Thulp it down

Thulp it down

The name by itself is enough to get you to want to know more. It’s awesome when chefs tap into their interests and then translate that creatively onto a plate ! You and me then get to be the lucky beneficiaries of such an adventure !

That’s exactly how I would describe the experience at Cafe’ Thulp, a small but fun adventure. It helps when you have a quirky side to your personality ,then you are bound to have fun ,equally quirky friends like Kavita Muthappa . This later on adds up to enjoying a fun, “straight out of a comic book”, meal.

Now,doesn’t that menu card immediately make you break into a smile ! While we do teach our kids to chew and savour each morsel ,here you are literally encouraged to ‘Thulp” it down !!!! The menu also features delicious grub ,perfect for ,gorging on ,mindlessly ! The names for each dish are crrazzy good and add to the entire dining experience !

Cafe’ Thulp was started by Chef Gautam Krishnankutty who is a huge comic and movie buff . He started it along with his friend Padmakumar. The need to enjoy a delicious juicy burger is how Cafe’ Thulp first became an idea and then a very popular reality ! Their ‘moo burgers’ are substantial and are guaranteed to satisfy the most connoisseur of burger thulpers ! They are unpretentious …what you see is what you get and they are are nothing short of lip smacking !

They also had a seasonal Christmas menu ,which featured duck ,ham and pineapple and other roasts. It’s very obvious that it is all about the food here. time and the diner’s money are not wasted in unnecessary details ! No frills and fancies ,they let the food do all the talking ! It doesn’t just talk ,it sings and twirls and does the flamenco !!!! Yep…it is delicious without an exaggeration !

My friend Rajesh enjoyed every bite off this plate and left it squeaky clean !

The ham and pineapple hit all the right flavour notes and was meltingly tender !

Being an equally big fan of vegetarian food,it was great to taste their pasta with the unbeatable (for me) flavours of basil ,sundried tomatoes, garlic and olive oil. With a sprinkling of good parmesan cheese, this was a plate that I could eat away ,happily on a deserted island for 365 days of the year ! Simply scrummy !!!!

The muffeletta and the mapusa mapusa ,what we ordered were wholesome and very filling. The portions are large and packed with ingredients,no empty air pockets, in the food, at this restaurant ! You can opt for whole grain bread ,so glad I did because their bread was superb. I vote for the brown bread any day, don’t waste your calories on the white !The muffelatta has a tasty olive tapenade, but you need to be very hungry to be able to finish the whole thing !

The mapusa mapusa is a lot heavier with the inclusion of oozy cheese ,my teenager absolutely loved every bite of it ! The pickle adds that much needed hit of chilli and tartness to cut through all that heaviness ! They do know to round off tastes, well.

Sweeeet.....sigh !!!!!

Considering we all have many sweet teeeeth ,we would have loved to try the sweet thangs but we were stuffed beyond belief. We’ll just have to make another trip to try all of the above out…for all your sakes,of course 😉 !!!!

It’s a restaurant that is perfect for the age group of 7 to 30 for sure ! If you have cool friends and family like I do ,then of course age doesn’t figure here in any which way !!! The interiors are rather simple, like roaming the halls of a comic book. It’s obvious that there is tremendous job satisfaction among the lot that work here because every bite is a happy one ! The place buzzes with the spark of good times and the thulping of food ! It’s casual ,very relaxed and has a ‘kick your friend under the table’ kind of attitude ! Since I have a thing against plastic utensils ,it would make me happy to see them change their blue translucent tumblers for something more natural…if not that,it’s a place I would gladly hang out, with any one of the lovely folk in my life ,my darling grandmother included !

So ,when in Bangalore ,if you haven’t already done so , do try out the naughty nosh at Thulp and let me know how your meal went ! For about 11 of us ,the approximate cost was about Rs.4500 with a couple of beers. That’s great value in my book !
